“My wife and I have been on a Medicare Advantage plan for a couple of years and feel it’s the best thing out there. Just need to get the waste cleaned up. Thank you.”
“I understand that you have to make difficult decisions this year as you look for ways to reform America 's Medicare and healthcare system. As one of 1.5 million Californians and millions of Medicare Advantage patients in the US that relies on the coordinated and comprehensive services my Medicare Advantage plan provides, I ask that you support healthcare proposals that include coordinated care and Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). This is fundamental to expanding quality and affordable care to more people.”
“Please do not take this benefit away from us as senior citizens. We rely on these services so much to help us in our aging years. It is getting harder & harder for seniors to make it on our limited income. Please do not take this away from us.”
“I was very fortunate to have a Medicare Advantage plan with Humana as I was hospitalized for 3 months at 3 different hospitals for total collapse of my lungs, was intubated twice, had a tracheostomy and was in intensive care for 3-1/2 weeks, then to an advanced care hospital for 4-1/2 weeks, then to a rehab hospital for 4 weeks. This was all covered; however, would not be with the new plan that is going into effect. For 10 days of hospitalization it will cost me $1,750 plus $150 ambulance fee, etc. The reason this has changed is because the government has lowered the cost of LOW-INCOME to $489 monthly. Low income was $1,180 or so this year. The poor people always seem to be the ones to pay. What about government plans, does their insurance change? Doubt it.”
“I have worked since I was 13 years old. I am now 59 and on Social Security Disability and eligible for Medicare in July 2010. I have work all my life and I served in Vietnam in 1969 in the U.S.ARMY. Don't do this to other Vet's and all of the Elderly.”
“My wife and I turned 80 this year and are very pleased with the Medicare Advantage program and can't afford a program that is going to take away more of our income and at out age we need the coverage possible at a no increase in cost.”
“I am 74 years old and in good health because of Medicare Advantage. If you dismantle this program and do not replace it with a program as good then people like me, I fear we may be doomed to poverty and early death. My wife and I have lost 50% of all the savings we had set aside to provide for our retirement and we are afraid now about the future. I beg you to look beyond your ambitions (for what you do now will be long remembered) and do not drop us into the abyss.”
“As a senior citizen I am outraged that you would cut Medicare Advantage from the health care bill. Over ten million seniors depend on their Medicare advantage plan for there health needs. With all of the out of control spending you people in Washington are presently doing, you take advantage of senior citizens! There will be consequences for your actions at the ballot box.”
“Please do not take Medicare Advantage away. We are seniors, husband and wife who need it. I have spinal stenosis broken vertebrea and my husband has cancer. We love our Medicare advantage plan and need it badly. We cannot afford any other plan. We have a lot of doctor bills and like our doctors. Please, please save it...”
“I am a Medicare Advantage member and am much happier with this plan than I would be with a straight Medicare plan that would have cost me thousands of dollars for ER visits, etc due to a heart rhythm problem that I have. I would be in favor of using a means test to determine how much the government would pay for my health insurance. This would eliminate the problem with the poorest individuals having to suffer more than others.”
“Many of my patients currently in senior managed care programs are asking what I think of health care reform and whether they can continue to receive similar care with the changes being proposed. I have tried best I can to assure them that they have nothing to fear and should support health care reform. I believe that continuation of Medicare Advantage and more widespread adoption of the Accountable Care Organization concept will continue to provide my senior population with the care they need and be a big part of the solution to our current health care crisis.”
“In April of this year I had surgery for ovarian cancer. After surgery I began chemotherapy treatment, which will end next year. Because I was seen by the surgeon and the surgery was scheduled so quickly, my life was saved. Plus, the cost to me was and is comparatively little. With out my Medicare Advantage insurance I would be financially wiped out. So this plan has not only saved my life but it has saved the money we need to live on for the remainder of my life.”
“As a medical professional myself for the past 30 years, I know that these types of innovations are what we truly need in healthcare reform. As a daughter and daughter-in-law of 4 senior citizens, we are ALL counting on you!”
“Not a California resident, but a concerned US citizen. I have seen the good results of managing health care costs with improved co-ordination of care for my parents. Having all aspects of health care co-coordinated under the Medicare advantage program provided them with physicals, lab work, imaging and specialists all in one system. Very cost effective! Of all things the so called health reform says they want, so why would you cut back on a program that is providing this already and seems to be working well. Why not encourage it, model it and expand on it.”
“As a health care provider that works for an ACO medical facility, I am proud to say that we continue to put our patient first. Our quality care of senior patients provides them with top notch team -oriented care with low co pays. We know that all of us need to watch our pennies these days especially our seniors who have limited income. The less they have to payout of pocket for their health care through programs such as Medicare Advantage the better. I urge you to keep in mind that we don't have to revamp the entire Healthcare industry- just keep what works and fix what’s broken.”
“As a physician in a multi-specialty medical group, I see first-hand the coordinated healthcare that my patients receive including preventative screening with yearly breast exams, mammograms, prostate cancer screening, colon cancer screening, cholesterol screening, diabetic screening and so on. I have instant access to all the patients x-rays, blood tests, and consultants using our EMR. Because of our model, I know which consultants patients are seeing - as opposed to my traditional Medicare patients I have difficulty tracking.
I believe cutting funding for Medicare Advantage would hurt the coordination of care that efficiency that the current Administration is reaching for. Under traditional Medicare, a patient could go to 5 different specialists and get 5 different MRIs of the brain - and no one would know what the other was doing. That is redundant and inefficient.”
“My Mother was able to be with our family an additional 20 years due to her Medicare Advantage plan. She was afflicted with Cancer. This was detected at an early stage due to the careful watch of her primary physician. She was able to see the physician regularly and was able to afford medication to treat her ailment.
We need to give our senior population every opportunity to live a long and healthy life. Please look at where you are in your age and realize you will be there very soon also.”
“I have had Medicare Advantage ever since it was introduced several years ago. It provides me the opportunity to have the doctors of my choice and coverage that is appropriate for me at a reasonable "out of pocket" cost. I previously had a Medicare Part B supplement plan that was costly because a high deductible plan was not available. I prefer high deductible plans because this encourages personable responsibility for ones health and greater attention when selecting a doctor. Please do not eliminate the Medicare Advantage plans, in my opinion, they have been the best solution in controlling medical costs.”
“My 90 year old mother is a Medicare Advantage patient and has been so for 15 years. This program has provided her excellent care in a more affordable program than traditional Medicare. Since she has been in this program, and the coordinated care it provides, she has required only one brief hospitalization. In addition, she has been the recipient of many benefits beyond traditional Medicare. Should the proposed Medicare Advantage cuts go into place, her benefits under Medicare Advantage will certainly be curtailed, and the risk of her requiring hospitalization in the future will increase. Please protect and preserve Medicare Advantage for my mother and all of the seniors of California.”
“As the daughter of 2 senior citizens in Medicare Advantage plans, I implore you to consider continuing their coverage using the same model that has recently saved my mother's life! Without true coordinated care - she would not have lived through the past few years!”

In 2007, Medicare Advantage saved seniors nearly $90 per month or $1000 per year in out of pocket costs. An estimated savings of approximately $7 billion annually. Additionally, compared to traditional Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans can reduce out-of-pocket costs by up to $4,000 annually for patients with the highest healthcare needs.
If Medicare reforms dismantle incentives for coordinated care, seniors will experience significant increases in out of pocket costs - at a time when many seniors have seen their retirement account’s decline by over 40 percent in value — and decreased quality of healthcare.
